    If you finance or lease vehicles in the UK, the practical question is rarely whether to track. It is whether to fit hardware to every car in the book, or to use the connectivity the manufacturer already built into it. This page sets out where each approach genuinely wins.

    When we would tell you to use hardware instead

    Use manufacturer data when

    • The vehicle is connected and reasonably recent
    • The case is already in default and the vehicle is out of reach
    • You want recovery-triggered access rather than always-on monitoring
    • You need patterns and best visit windows, not just a dot on a map
    • You do not want a per-unit hardware and fitting programme

    Use a tracker when

    • The vehicle predates connectivity or has none
    • You control the vehicle at point of sale and can fit hardware then
    • You need a reporting interval tighter than the manufacturer provides
    • The asset class sits outside supported brands, for example some plant or specialist vehicles

    Most books end up mixed. The useful exercise is to run your VIN list through a coverage check first, so you know what share of the portfolio needs hardware at all before you buy any.

    Under UK GDPR the lawful basis for recovery is normally legitimate interests, and the balancing test turns on proportionality. Continuous location monitoring of every financed vehicle for the whole term is a much harder argument than access that begins at default and ends when the case closes.

    TRAICE is built for the second pattern. Access is tied to an open recovery case, the customer keeps the right to object under Article 21, and the lender remains the controller with TRAICE as processor under a DPA.     Questions we get from lenders comparing connected vehicle data with fitting hardware.

    For connected vehicles, yes. Manufacturer connectivity already provides location and vehicle status, so a lender does not need to fit hardware to a car it has financed. Trackers remain the only option for older or non-connected vehicles, and many portfolios run both: OEM data for the connected majority, hardware for the rest.

    A tracker is brand-agnostic and works on any vehicle, including pre-2016 stock, imports and vehicles whose connected services are switched off. It also reports at an interval you control. The trade-offs are cost per unit, a fitting appointment, physical access to the vehicle, maintenance, and the fact that hardware can be found and removed.

    Covert installation raises significant legal and data protection questions and is not something we advise on. TRAICE avoids the question entirely: there is no device, no fitting appointment and no vehicle contact. Processing is disclosed in the finance agreement and privacy notice, and it is scoped to an open recovery case.
