Fraud · Connected-vehicle evidence

    Mileage fraud

A plausible reading is not an independent check.

An odometer blocker may suppress the mileage shown at inspection, recorded in MOT history and even reported in the manufacturer's own feed. TRAICE cross-checks reported odometer change against GPS and location-derived movement, so a believable number is not the only evidence your team has.

    The investigation

The reading and the journey should agree.

A manufacturer odometer feed can repeat the same suppressed reading as the dashboard. Location observations provide a separate cross-check: recorded movement, conservative route-distance estimates and reported mileage change. The comparison can reveal discrepancies that a one-off inspection or historical mileage record misses.

    01

    Frozen odometer

Reported mileage remains unchanged while location observations show significant movement. The mismatch can flag a blocked or disconnected reading for investigation.

    02

    Below a feasible road route

The odometer increase falls below a conservative shortest feasible road-route estimate between observed points. Data quality and route assumptions are considered before the discrepancy is escalated.

    03

    Gradual under-recording

Small discrepancies recur across multiple journeys. Repeated comparisons can highlight systematic under-recording that looks plausible in an isolated reading.

    Independent movement evidence. Clear limitations.

GPS samples, manufacturer reporting intervals and route coverage affect the comparison. Observed distance and route estimates are not a complete measurement of every mile driven. Findings support investigation; they do not establish true lifetime mileage or prove fraud on their own.

Compare the odometer with movement, not with another copy of the same reading.

    A focused investigation workflow

    01

    Connect eligible vehicles

Confirm connectivity and authorised access for the vehicles under an active finance, lease or fleet agreement. No hardware is fitted.

    02

    Cross-check distance

Compare reported odometer changes with available location-derived movement and conservative journey-distance estimates over time.

    03

    Investigate discrepancies

Review recurring mismatches, their data quality and context before deciding whether to inspect the vehicle or challenge the reading.

    Beyond the fraud investigation

Mileage verification for lease returns and disposal

Comparisons collected during an active agreement give lease-return, inspection and remarketing teams more than a single dashboard reading. Review end-of-contract mileage, support resale and disposal decisions, and put refinancing assessments in context. The record highlights discrepancies; it does not certify true lifetime mileage.

An inspection or MOT history records the mileage shown at a particular time. If a blocker suppresses that reading, it can still look plausible. Connected movement offers a separate comparison, but no method detects every device or manipulation.

It may report the same suppressed mileage as the vehicle display. Comparing manufacturer odometer data with GPS and location-derived movement avoids relying solely on another copy of that reading.

Available location points and conservative road-route estimates are compared with odometer change for the corresponding period. Missing samples, route assumptions and reporting intervals limit how confidently a discrepancy can be interpreted.

No. A frozen reading, route mismatch or repeated under-recording is an indicator for review. Reporting delays, missing data and other explanations must be considered before alleging fraud.

Yes. A record of comparisons during an active agreement can support end-of-contract mileage review, vehicle inspections, refinancing and remarketing decisions. It does not certify true lifetime mileage.

Timing depends on eligible vehicle data, reported movement and the type of discrepancy. A frozen reading may become apparent when movement is observed; gradual under-recording requires repeated comparisons. We do not promise a fixed detection period.
